Rev. M. C. [Montecue Cuthbert] ALLENCENSUS/LAND/MISC. INFORMATION

updated 7/10/2004, by James A. Strain, © 2004

Buried at Eupora, MS. There are two monuments; one is the original and then there is a more modern double stone for Narcissa and him. Other Allens are immediately adjacent.

Masonic emblem on original monument. Death appears in the Masonic Death register, a compiled published book, as Mortimer Conley Allen for lodge 423, Eupora, MS, 29 Sep, 1907. His obituary states he was the Chaplain for the lodge.

His parents are mentioned in a letter from William E. Conly, his uncle, to Henry Haynsworth in November 1828, as having just moved from TN to IL. I believe his parents were married in Lawrence County, AL, prior to this letter sent from AL to SC. In the letter, Conly states that his other family is in Lawrence Co. There is a marriage record online in Lawrence Co., AL, for Geo. T. Allen to Anne Conley, 28 DEC 1820, performed by M. G., with bond by A. Sale. Due to the date of the letter, and the date of M. C. Allen’s birth, it is possible that he was born during the migration from TN to IL. This would include the states of KY and OH, and might account for the confusion that appears in his obituary and the various census records for his place of his birth.

The Conlys migrated from SC>AL>TN>MS. The Allens went from TN/AL/TN>IL>TX>MS>TX. George T. Allen ultimately stayed in TX with his 3 youngest children, while his wife and son, M. C., remained in MS. It is said that he often traveled back and forth between TX and MS. His nephew lived near Mansfield, LA from 1850-1869, which was on the trip between the two locations. In 1869, Dr. George T. Allen was shot and killed when his own gun accidentally discharged, and is said to be buried at the now extinct New Bethany Church near Mansfield, LA, where his nephew was the founding minister.

Dr. George T. Allen had guardianship of two children from his deceased older brother, Walker Allen. His nephew, Walker Montecue Allen, became a prominent minister in the Cumberland Presbyterian Church. [See W. M. Allen’s biography.] I believe there are Bibles in possession of the descendants of W. M. Allen that contain information on the Allen family from Dr. George T. Allen upward, as well as for his siblings. They may contain information on M. C. Allen, and his sisters also.

A George T. Allen family on the 1830 census in Quincy, Adams Co., IL, consists of one male under age 5, one male age 10-14, one male age 30-39, one female under age 5, one female age 10-14, one female age 15-19, and one female age 20-29. [I am uncertain if this is the correct family, but it is the only family with this name in IL in the 1830 Census, and the family does not appear in IL in the 1840 census.] [I have recently been told that the family may appear in the Morgan Co. IL Census for 1830.]

Land patents are issued to George T. Allen in Yalobusha Co., MS, near George Conly, his father-in-law, on March 12, 1836, after they return from a year in TX. He and wife, Ann E., sell other land near this in 1837, which gives their residence as Carroll Co., MS. Land is sold first to Marcus Heath, and then to the State for tax due, in 1837 and 1848, respectively. Other land is sold on 9/5/1839 (Sections 7&29/T22/R7E). All deeds are not yet located. Ann E.’s brother, Middleton Conly, resided in Carroll Co., just after 1850, until his death in 1878. There is additional record of a Mrs. Ann E. Allen purchasing and selling land in Carroll Co., full deed not yet located, between 1834-56.

April 9, 1842, Two Land Patents to "George Tribble Allen of Pontotoc Co." (The below two patents don't appear to be in Pontotoc Co., though.)

SE 1/4 Section 15, Township 3, Range 10E (160A).

SE 1/4 Section 22, Township 2, Range 10E (160A).

The date of a land patent is usually several years after the sale at the local level.

No property has yet been researched for Eupora. M. C. Allen resided in Slate Springs during the latter part of the 1900s. The entry in the Strain family Bible for the marriage of James Robert Strain to Naomi Allen in 1895 states they were married in Slate Springs at the home of the bride. Rev. M. C. Allen was a prominent Baptist Minister for several churches, and is mentioned in a letter regarding ministers from early residents of Calhoun County. It is known that he was Minister for Philadelphia Baptist Church, and there are entries related to him in those session minutes.

M. C. Allen served in the Mississippi and Confederate cavalry, and appears as Montecue (Monticue) C. Allen, Private, in Company F, 2rd Partisan Rangers, known as Ballentine’s Regiment. He was mustered in on 12 JUL 1862, and the last record in his file shows him present for roll in OCT 1864. The organization was known as Ballentine’s Regiment of Cavalry in the field, but it was designated as the 2d Regiment Mississippi Partisan Rangers on records of the Confederate War Department. His file contains a signed receipt for a pair of shoes, which is the only signature located to date.

M. C. Allen’s obituary appears on the front page of The Eupora Progress, M. W. Sharp, Editor and Publisher, at Eupora, Mississippi, on Thursday, Sept. 12th, 1907. (Number 37, Volume XVIII.) It includes the following paragraph:

Bro. Allen has been twice married. By his first union six children survive him, and by his last he is survived by an aged widow and three children. His children are: Messrs. W. W. Allen, Slate Springs; Geo. F. Allen, Texas; Joseph S. Allen, Terry, Miss.; Mesdames H. H. McKee, Eupora; J. W. McPhail, Slate Springs; Lucy Allen Smoak, Jackson; T. C. and Arch Mabry, Texas; J. W. Lowry, Grenada. [Joseph should be Josiah.]

M. C. Allen’s first wife was Nancy Shettles. His second was Narcissa Martha Dunn.

The McKee name appears as an author of the history of the Conly Family in the Webster Co., MS Family History book.

It is not known if there was a will or estate settlement made at the time of his death. It is said that his widow, Narcissa, lived on a family farm at Vaiden in the years 1912-1914, and her daughter Laura Lowry and husband lived with her at this time. It has been said that she died at her the home of her son, Josiah/Joe Allen, in Terry, MS. Property records in Carroll Co. have not yet been researched.
