Caroline, the fourth child of George and Elizabeth Conly, was born 4 Oct 1809, and died 25 Dec 1845 in Yalobusha (Grenada) Co., MS. As she didn’t live until the 1850 Census, it’s assumed that she was born in SC, due to the birth of her older siblings, and then a younger one (George W. Conly, born abt. 1817) who all give SC as their birth location. Caroline, along with one child, is buried in the Conly Family Cemetery.

Caroline married Samuel W. Hankins, who was a minister in TN. He died in Lauderdale, Co., TN in 1842, and prior to that purchased land next to the Conlys in Yalobusha Co., having a land patent dated 1836. Most likely, Caroline met him when they moved to Yalobusha Co., then they moved to TN for him to preach, though they could have met in TN prior to the move. He appears as a witness to many documents in Lauderdale Co., TN, such as marriages, estates, and deeds. They appear in Lauderdale County in the 1840 census, and the sale of the perishable items of his estate is recorded in Will book A, p. 132, dated 23 May 1843. Caroline is his Adminstratrix, and has his estate probation transferred to Yalobusha Co., where it appears on record there.

After Samuel W. Hankins death, Caroline returns to Yalobusha Co., to live near (or on) her parents’ plantation. After Caroline dies, her brother, George W. Conly, assumes the administration of his estate, as well as hers. In addition, George W. Conly becomes guardian to their three surviving minor children after her death. A separate packet of vouchers details the entire lives of the three children as they grow up, become of age and the estate is settled. Several hundred pages of the estate are yet to be examined.

Their children are:

A. M. Zerah Hankins, b. abt 1837

Georgianna Rebecca Hankins, 15 Aug 1838 – 14 June 1839

Samuella Caroline "Carrie" Hankins, b. abt. 1840, married E. E. Pittman

Samuel William W. Hankins, b. abt. 1843

Zerah, the grandson of George Conly, appears as an Overseer to his estate, and then moves to Choctaw Co., apparently, where he appears in the 1860 Census schedules (regular and slave). He is enumerated as Zerah Hawkins, a common mis-transcription/spelling of the Hankins surname. In addition, his first cousin, M. C. Allen, also lives in Choctaw Co. for this census. Apparently, they both moved to establish their own farms after the death of their grandmother, Mrs. Elizabeth Conly. They had both been enumerated in the Conly household in 1850. Zerah is one of the largest purchasers at the estate sale of George Conly. In addition, there is a Z. (Zeruh) Hankins listed as a private in the "Grenada Rifles" 15th Reg’t MS Infantry, Cos. G & K, during the Civil War.

Caroline Hankins appears in the household of George W. Conly as 20, and born in TN, in the 1860 Census for Yalobusha Co. MS. She and her husband, E. E. Pittman, are summoned from Hinds Co., MS for the final settlement of her estate inheritance as a ward of George W. Conly. She married 26 Oct 1862, in Yalobusha Co.

Samuel W. W. Hankins is found as a "slave master" in the household of his uncle, John Conly (Conaly), in the 1860 Census for Yalobusha County. No other record of him has been found after this date, although there is a Samuel W. Hankins in the 15th Reg’t MS Infantry, Co. G, which had volunteers from Yalobusha Co.
