Alonzo W. Crawford
By James A. Strain
I've just begun to search out this ancestral line. Alonzo Crawford was married to Emily Worthington, and they are buried, along with several of their children, in the Batesville, Panola Co., MS, cemetery. Several of their children never married, and subsequently maintained a household in the old Crawford estate their entire lives. Alonzo's occupation is listed as Tinsmith in one census.
I believe Alonzo and Emily were married in Claiborne Co., MS, as I found an online record for Alonzo Crawford and Emily Washington there, and then census entries for 1840, 1850, 1860, and 1870 that seem to match the known facts. The 1860 Census for Grand Gulf, Claiborne Co., MS has the following household:
N Crawford, 50, 1809, Massachusetts, Female
M Worthington, 29, 1830, MS, F
L Crawford, 20, 1839, M
F Crawford, 12, 1847, F
E Worthington, 16, 1843, F
L Worthington, 14, 1845, F
This seems to be both Emily and Lizzie Worthington, clearly in the household with names of Crawford. Lizzie was an old maid aunt to the Crawford family, and is buried adjacent to them in the cemetery.
A bit more research has turned up a distant cousin, who also descends from Alonzo and Elizabeth Worthington Crawford. Her information confirms my suspicions and further identifies a couple of more earlier generations as follows in two separate posts on rootsweb. Jefferson County is adjacent and to the south of Claiborne County in southern MS on the Mississippi River.
My Robinsons are located in Massachusetts (Barnstable Co.--Falmouth)at
the beginning of the 1800s. Early names are John (married Lucy Crowell Jan
1824); Zenas(?) --Nancy Sandford Bassett Robinson is his daughter, I think, born
in 1810--John's brother Henry; Uncle Joseph and daughters Lucy and Mary. Other
surnames located in Falmouth and connected to the Robinsons in some way are
Sandford (Sanford), Jenkins, and Shiverick. My most complete information begins
with Nancy who moved with her family to Rodney, Mississippi, sometime after her
birth (1810) and married James Lewis Crawford (born 1796, Spotsylvania Co., VA)
in 1828. Their children included Alonzo Western Crawford who married Anna Maria
Emily Worthington (whose roots are in Philadelphia, Penn., but who was born in
1841 in Rodney). Their fourth child was my grandfather, Alonzo William. (Thank
goodness the initials A.W. were passed on down to first born sons and not the
name Alonzo!) I have two letters written from Falmouth, one dated 14 Jan 1830,
and the other dated around 1828 to Zenas from Barry Sanford who signed himself
"your father" but I think
father-in-law.
I'll try to post a better line on this family, once I've completed a bit of research. I only have one picture of this entire family, which shows Alonzo, Emily, and all their children. I descend from Anna Eutopia Crawford, who is on the front row left, sitting down.
