Thomas Dunn was born November 20, 1776 or 1778 in Columbia Co. (or Wilkes Co.?), GA and died June 11, 1855 near Alva, Montgomery Co., MS.  He was the son of Colonel Josiah Dunn, but his mother’s name is not known.  He married Nancy Ward on December 24, 1799 in Columbia Co., GA. Nancy Ward was born January 04, 1775 near Baltimore Area, MD and died March 20, 1857 near Alva, Montgomery Co., MS.  Both Thomas and Nancy are buried in the Dunn – O’Neal Cemetery near Alva.

Born in GA, Thomas Dunn migrated to Choctaw Co. MS in the 1830s with several of his sons, where they first show on tax rolls in 1837Land patents are issued to John Marlin Dunn in 1840, 1841, and 1860; to Samuel Seymour Dunn in 1848 and 1860; and to Thomas Dunn in 1849.  Note that land patents take several years to clear the federal government and be issued after the land is purchased locally.  Their land is located on Dunn Creek just north of Alva and on the border of present day Montgomery and Grenada Counties.  Part of Samuel Seymour Dunn’s land lies in Grenada County.  The Dunn – O’Neal Cemetery lies on their former land
