MIZELL Family

By James A. Strain

There are several excellent pages on the MIZELL surname already online.  The name first appears as Measles in Jamestown in the early 1600s, and was pronounced MEE-zuls (like the disease) until well into the middle 1800s.

I descend, based on known family Bibles, deeds, other land records, and census information from John Mizell >Cader (Kader) Mizell (ca. 1750-1825) m. Mary Hare>John Mizell (1793-1864) m. Prividen Pruden>John Richard Mizell (ca. 1834-1895) m. Sarah Carline Peden>Samuel Smithwick Mizell (1871-1932) m. Mary Magdalene "Maggie" Caldwell>James Floyd "Jack" Mizell (1905-1973) m. Anna Ouida Dorr (1909-1999).

The first John listed there seems to have descended from his father John, who perhaps was a son from the children of either Lawrence or Luke Mizell, the two known sons of Luke Mizell (b. 1614) of Jamestown.  There seems to either be a documentary break in the line or, by family tradition, the father or grandfather of Cader may have migrated from France in the early 1700s, with two brothers.  Someone please help me solve this mystery!!

I applaud the efforts of both Patrick Pearsey and Bob Baird who have posted so much factual information online about the early deeds and wills for the Mizells in Surry Co. VA, and Bertie Co. NC.  Your work is beneficial to thousands, I'm sure.

If anyone has actual copies of the Bible passed down from John>Cader>John, please let me know!!  We are told in Cader's Revolutionary War Pension Application, apparently, that his son in KY (John?) had the Bible of his father.

My personal story centers on the information I have available, and begins with my grandfather, James Floyd "Jack" Mizell.
