Descendants of William W. (Wad) Thompson m. Nancy Jane Strain

Generation No. 1

1. WILLIAM W. (WAD) THOMPSON1 was born Abt. 1847 in VA, and died April 10, 1879 in Yalobusha Co., MS. He married NANCY JANE (H.) STRAIN December 05, 1866 in Yalobusha Co., MS, daughter of JAMES STRAIN and CAROLINE ROBINSON.

Notes for WILLIAM W. (WAD) THOMPSON:

David E. Kelly, R. H. Thompson, and H. C. Thompson are signators to W. W. Thompson's Administrator's Bond, dated June 30, 1879. Kelly is his brother-in-law and Robert H. Thompson is his father. H. C. is not listed in the will of Robert H. Thompson as a living child in 1883. He could be Robert's brother, or a son who died, without heirs, between 1879 and 1883.

In the estate papers, there is a payment to a note from W. W. and G. E. Thompson in 1882.

W. W. Thompson's sole surviving heir, Pauline (Paulina) W. Thompson, aged 7 at his death, is clearly linked to the Strains by the virtue of a document stating that W. W. Thompson died with an interest in a Mercantile Establishment in Air Mount known as Strain and Thompson's Store. Pauline Thompson is also mentioned as being a niece of James Robert Strain in an 1898 issue of his newspaper the "Democratic Banner."

Notes for NANCY JANE (H.) STRAIN:

Wedding License is N. H. Strain. Family tradition is Nannie Jane. Her aunt was Nancy Jane. 1850 census has Mary, 3 yrs. old, b. GA. 1860 Census has Nancy J., 12 yrs. old, b. Miss. I am fairly certain that she is named for her aunt, Nancy Jane Strain Bowie, and the H on her wedding bond is a mistake.

By family tradition, Nannie Jane had 5 children, all dead in the early 20th century, with a note that Pauline married Wad Thompson.

Children of WILLIAM THOMPSON and NANCY STRAIN are:

i. PAULINE W. THOMPSON, b. March 28, 1872, Yalobusha Co., MS; d. August 20, 1899, Coffeeville, Yalobusha Co., MS3; m. EDGAR DUDLEY STONE, December 21, 1898, Coffeeville, Yalobusha Co., MS.

Notes for PAULINE W. THOMPSON:

Pauline is orphaned in 1879, with her uncle, David E. Kelly, appointed as Guardian. Her father's estate includes property in LeFlore County, which collects annual rent. Also, she is heir to her father's interest in the Strain & Thompson Mercantile Store in Air Mount.

Her guardian bond includes David E. Kelly, her uncle, R. H. Thompson, her grandfather, and James F. Kelly, unknown relationship.

The 1880 Census appears to have her living in R. Cormon's Household, and being identified as a Granddaughter. This relationship is still unclear.

Court Case No. 1253, Petition of Administrator for Authority to Advance Necessaries to minor orphan Pauline W. Thompson, filed Oct. 16, 1879, includes the following statement:

"And further informs your Honor that said intestator left surviving him and now living one orphaned child whose mother Nancy Jane Thompson died several years before her father."
