ROBERT CALDWELL

My GGGgrandfather, by James A. Strain, © 2006

The following text, a history of the Robert and Linnie Caldwell family, was written by their grandson, Thomas Clinton Caldwell, when Thomas was 77 years old.  It was sent to me by a cousin, Karna Zierden, and I don't know the full origins from whence it came, though I presume it was passed down in the family on the Mizell line based on our common research interests.  I've not researched any of the factual data in this two-page typewritten history and have transcribed it as it appeared to me in type, with only minor obvious changes in punctuation or capitalization.  A few words were not legible on the side and bottom of one page.  It appears that at least two, perhaps three different documents were on this same two-page history, as noted in brackets below.  Robert and Linna Caldwell's son, John Charles Caldwell is my direct ancestor.  He married Martha Pittman, and their daughter, Maggie Pittman, married Samuel Smithwick Mizell, my GGgrandfather.

A family reunion was held at Mr. and Mrs. James Wrights Sunday.  There were 28 present, including Mrs. Wrights sisters, Mrs. Florence Phillips, of New Burnsides, Ill. Mrs. Fay Taylor of DeSoto, Ill., Mrs. Bertie Wright, of Golconda, and Mrs. Bessie Anderson, of Hollywood, Fla.

This was Mrs. Anderson and her husband’s first visit back home in twenty years.

The five sisters stayed over night together in the home of Mrs. James Wright, being all together for the first time in 47 years.

All of the 38 present including sisters and husband, children and grandchildren took dinner and enjoyed a picnic at Lake Glendale.

[The following seems to be a separate entry, probably from a newspaper.]

We received the sad news of the death of Claude Caldwell, and old acquaintance of ours, since my last writing.  Although he had been in declining health for several years, he always had a friendly smile and a kind word for everyone.

Claude was in reality just another war casualty for he saw action in the First World War and never really recovered from the effects of it.  But we feel that he has gone to a hero’s reward.  Another ace of Uncle Sams ____ given? his life that we, the living ____ coming
