HAYNSWORTH Family

By James A. Strain

There are several excellent pages with sources online for my early Haynsworth (Haynesworth) ancestors.

One of the best is by Sadie Greening Sparks, with whom I've never had any contact.  I applaud her efforts for including references of the early documents pertaining to this family online.

Click > Richard Haynsworth to go to her site for substantial information on my GGGGGGgrandparents, Richard Haynsworth II and Elizabeth Hesse, which also shows their daughter, Mary (Maria) Haynsworth married to Richard Wells. Richard Haynsworth II was the son of Richard Haynsworth I and Margaret Dyne, my GGGGGGGgrandparents.

Substantial information on the Haynsworth family is also contained in the "Haynsworth-Furman and Allied Families" book by Hugh Charles Haynsworth (1942).  My grandfather's uncle, Josiah "Joe" Samuel Allen, contributed to this book, and a mimeograph sheet on the Haynsworth family was passed to me from my grandparents.  I've transcribed it in order to share his research with all who might be interested.

Click > Haynsworth Family Sheet to see Joe Allen's family sheet on his lineage from the Haynsworths.

The Haynsworth-Furman book has several interesting facts regarding the family, though most are not my direct ancestors.  For example, Richard Furman is the namesake for Furman University, and it was a Haynsworth that lit the cannon firing the first shot of the Civil War at Fort Sumter while still a cadet at the Military Institute (the Citadel) there.

Two online biographies related to this family are:

Richard Haynsworth II by John Tindal.

Richard Furman m. Elizabeth Haynsworth by A. Scott Henderson.

This site mirrors Sadie Sparks site on the Haynsworth name.
